Volunteering with Hospice of San Joaquin

Volunteers are an integral part of our team! Orientation is offered at least twice a year, depending on the program's needs. We prepare volunteers to confidently support our team, community, patients and families.

Volunteer Orientation

Late Spring 2026 Volunteer Orientation: Date TBD

Age Requirements: 18+ to volunteer, 21+ to work with patients

6-Month Minimum Commitment

 

Orientation: Topics covered include, but are not limited to: History and Philosophy of Hospice of San Joaquin, Understanding Terminal Illness, Death & Dying issues, Grief and Loss, Communication and Boundaries, and Family Dynamics.

Special Event Volunteers: Orientation is not required to lend a hand with set up and take down at our community events or fundraisers, orientation is not required.

Group Projects

Administrative/Office

Support our administrative staff with your unique background and skill sets. Opportunities are available in all departments.

Events

Help make the magic happen. Provide support for a variety of events supporting Hospice of San Joaquin including, Butterfly Auxiliary events, Tree of Lights, fairs, information booths and outside events held to support Hospice of San Joaquin.

Pet Therapy

Our certified pet therapy animals offer comfort and provide an uplifting experience for our patients and families. Pet therapy teams are enjoyed by our patients in the Hospice House, facilities and in the community. They are also frequently seen at grief support groups and special events.

Represent Hospice of San Joaquin by providing general information about our programs and services, distributing resources such as grief support schedules, event information and freebies to the community.

Direct Patient Volunteer Opportunities

All direct patient volunteers are required to attend our volunteer training in its entirety prior to working with our patients.

*Further department specific training may apply.

Family Care Team

Offer your loving heart and listening ears and meet the special needs of our hospice patients and their families.  Some of the special needs of the family and patient include companionship, emotional support, practical support, and respite care.

Veterans Program

Veteran volunteers are paired with a patient who is a veteran or has a military background. Similar backgrounds and shared experiences allow for deeper connections between the patient and volunteer.  The Veteran to Veteran Program is a great way for our veteran volunteers to connect with their veteran patients.

Bereavement

Support members of our community after the death of a loved one.  Bereavement volunteers have the opportunity to reach out to the community via follow-up phone calls or by acting as a facilitator for support groups, under the supervision of the Bereavement Supervisor.

Certified Music Therapy

Help bring joy and peace to our patients with music. There are various opportunities to share your music, including volunteering at Camp Caterpillar or playing for patients in the Hospice House.

Hospice House

Support the Hospice House, a six-bed residential facility at our Stockton campus. Volunteers have a variety of ways they can help improve the resident’s quality of life. There are many options from basic house cleaning to patient and family companionship.

Every Life Matters

Provide company and comfort to patients who may not have any family with them in the final hours of life.  Volunteers keep a vigil to ensure no one dies alone.

End of Life Doula

End-of-Life Doula

An End-of-Life is a trained nonmedical professional that serves as a mentor to patients and caregivers regarding end-of-life concerns. The doula's objective is to help patients and caregivers feel “Powerful, Prepared, and Peaceful” during this difficult time.
